Inhaled insulin is here! The FDA has approved it. For both patients suffering from diabetes, as well as elite bodybuilders seeking to add insane amounts of mass to their frame, a new version is available which allows the user to deliver his insulin dose several times daily using a device which closely resembles an asthma inhaler.
The cost of inhaled insulin is much higher than that of injectable insulin, but the benefits can be worth the cost. We all know of the negative stigma which is often associated with people who use needles for injections in public. Most people wouldn’t stop to ask if the person is diabetic – they’d simply shake their head and keep walking. For a bodybuilder who uses insulin – or a diabetic who also happens to carry some muscle mass – the image of a muscular person injecting with needles can be very destructive. You can tell your co-workers it’s medically required until you’re blue in the face, but you’ll still always be known as the steroid abuser at the end of the day. This can invariably affect promotions, pay raises, and the availability of other opportunities when the public image of the company is at stake. Finally, many people just plain hate needles. Injecting is often messy, painful, uncomfortable, and many people will miss injections because they simply hate needles. Inhaled insulin is quick, painless, and alleviates all of these problems and associated perceptions.
Exubera is the product name of the new inhaled Insulin, and it is produced by Phizer. It can be used by both Type I and Type II diabetes patients. As with standard insulin, it can be purchased with relative ease from a pharmacy or medical supply outlets. Diabetes is a popular medicine among tens of millions of people worldwide, and can be purchased with relative ease. This is why it has become so popular among bodybuilders in the last decade. As recent national and political events have led to tighter border security and greater enforcement of steroid laws, anabolic steroids have been much harder to obtain. Insulin, on the other hand, has only become easier to locate, due to the use of the internet for purchasing and the great availability of the product. Heck, many bodybuilders just use their diabetic grandmother or uncle as their source for this valuable drug.
Insulin is a tricky beast. People with Type I and Type II diabetes have to use it several times per day to regulate their blood sugar levels and other hormone functions. Without it, they can die. Insulin leads to rapid weight gain in many patients when their carbohydrate intake levels exceed what their doctors and/or nutritionist recommends. Since it is often the overweight people who are undisciplined with their diets who develop diabetes in the first place, it’s no wonder this is a problem.
For bodybuilders, the problem isn’t overdoing carbohydrates – it’s “underdoing” them. Many bodybuilders quietly pass away each year because they don’t consume enough carbohydrates when dieting and using insulin. If you are going to use insulin, the inhaled version is very convenient. However, the same rules of caution apply!

Exubera has been pulled off the market and completely discontinued by Pfizer. The doctors refused to write the prescriptions for Exubera when it was evident that it took more than just writing a prescription to sell the product. It takes a dedicated MD to adjust the inhale and follow up with the patient to make sure they are doing well with the prescription. The aparatus also needs maintenance or it will become clogged up just like a car engine. Many of the MDs just don’t have the time due to the insurance companies cutting the amount of money they will consider fair for the service rendered.
Exubera is dead, not coming back, but on the horizon is Technosphere by Mankind. This is the only inhale that shows much promise.
