You’ve probably heard of the female condition known as ‘menopause’ that affects women as they age. The title has nothing to do with men, even though it’s part of the name. You probably rest happily in the fact that no such ailment can ever befall you, right? Wrong. Let’s answer a few questions about Andropause, and what you can do to prevent it.

Q: First off, what in the world is Andropause?

A: Your testosterone levels are naturally going to decline as you age. This will result in a loss of muscle mass and strength, deflated energy levels, depressed sexual function, and rises in body fat. This is Andropause. Your body gets old, and hormone levels drop across the board – particularly in testosterone levels. This can be devastating in many areas of life. It used to be thought of as unavoidable in men, but may have found ways to battle nature long enough to get a few more vibrant years out of their bodies.

Q: Is it a scientific certainty that I will suffer from it one day?

A: Yes. As you age, your testosterone producing cells – the leydig cells – become dormant. It’s unavoidable, but modern medicine has come to your aid if needed.

Q: I would like to postpone or avoid it completely. Any advice?

A: Andropause can be postponed by completely avoiding being dependent upon the natural production of testosterone in your body – and becoming dependent upon artificially administered testosterone. This will offset the effects of reduced testosterone production in the body. Your levels will remain as steady as they were a decade or two previously.

Q: If I use testosterone to avoid Andropause, will I be dependent upon it forever?

A: Yes. Perhaps not forever, but certainly following a long period of time using testosterone, you will need post-cycle therapy. For this reason, it’s not recommended that bodybuilders abuse hormones and AAS as youths. They’ll have plenty of time in their older years to use it, when it will make a noticeable difference. Becoming one of those men who is dependent upon testosterone for life isn’t always a good thing, and can have side effects. Your best bet is to enjoy your natural T levels as long as possible, then embrace modern medicine when life dictates the need.

Q: I’m ready to go see my doctor for artificial testosterone. What should I expect?

A: Be prepared for the very good chance he will reject your pleas for an artificial testosterone prescription for life. He’ll likely want to cover his bases legally by asking you to try a few different alternatives first. Diet, nutrition, training, cardiovascular exercise, and other means will be attempted first. He may have you use a testosterone gel or patch for a few months to see if your naturally declining testosterone levels begin to return to previous levels. Over time, you may reach a level of trust with your doctor whereas he sees you as a person who is responsible enough to handle artificially injected testosterone. If and when that day arrives, Andropause will become a memory very quickly!
