So you’re interested in insulin. Your curiosity is piqued about this amazing drug has done for bodybuilders worldwide, and you’re ready to see what it can do for you. Before you visit your local pharmacy, claim to be diabetic, spend a few hundred dollars and come home and start pinning yourself, you should check out a few common misconceptions held by bodybuilders regarding the use of insulin.

Insulin is a great drug to use when entering competitive bodybuilding

You should already have several years of both competition and steroid use behind you before you even consider the use of insulin. It is an advanced bodybuilding drug. Period.

Carbs and fats don’t really matter with insulin

Watching the amount of grams you ingest while using insulin is imperative. Have you ever seen some of the DVDs of professional bodybuilders? At mealtime the guys tend to live on large piles of rice cakes. What do matter are fats. During the two-hour, post-injection window, bodybuilders should avoid fat at all costs. Clean, fast-burning carbohydrate sources and very lean protein, such as whey or very lean turkey or chicken are preferred. Insulin and a double cheeseburger are not a good combination, no matter how much you enjoy bulking.

Insulin’s gains are good, but not great

Take a look at the professional bodybuilding lineups from 1960 through 1990. The men were all about the same size, with varying degrees of muscularity. They were all using the same compounds for off-season and show preparation. Then, the nineties ushered in a new era of drug use highlighted with the use of growth hormone, igf-1, and above all, insulin. In the late 1990s, you saw bodybuilders gain twenty pounds after having maxed out on their professional rank size years ago. Something gave them muscle mass overnight, and that something was insulin. As an amateur bodybuilder, you will see very good gains using insulin, as long as your diet, training, and rest are planned and executed correctly.

Don’t mix insulin injections with food

Wrong – and this one can cost you your life. Immediately after injecting insulin following a workout, you will need to replenish with protein and above all, carbohydrates. Failure to eat with a minimal dose can lead to dizziness, nausea, and even death. We’ll never know how many bodybuilders who perish from “cardiac arrest” are actually victims of secret insulin use for muscle gains, but the threat of this occurring is very real. As bodybuilders mix the worlds of low-carb dieting and insulin – something which should never be done – these tragedies will occur.

Insulin is a highly dangerous drug

This one is both true and false. In moderate dosages with responsible dieting, insulin is safe. If you’re just looking for a small boost to natural training, obviously Winstrol, Anavar, or a cycle of testosterone is going to be safer. But for the more advanced athlete needing to put on size, insulin is a drug with minimal long term effects as long as it is used correctly. Unless you have done enough research to consider yourself an expert on insulin, you should not be using it.
