Trying to deny the fact that steroid use has permeated the best of the leagues in some of the most popular sports on the planet is akin to denying that corruption exists in government. Most, if not all, of the sports have been tainted to some extent by the simple fact that the athletes we all love have decided to impress a little more with their extra ‘abilities’. We cheer when they break this and that record and we are equally saddened when we confirm that the feats were courtesy of EPO or other drugs that have been banned in sporting circles. Equally true is the fact that many former athletes have candidly stated that majority of their teammates were hooked on the juice which normally takes the shape of the human growth hormones.
One of the favorite pastimes in America has to be the game of baseball. The very dear nature of the game has clouded many peoples judgment to the fact that their heroes are actually on the juice. It is painful to imagine that your hero is cheating you before your very eyes when you are chanting his name as he makes homerun after homerun. The sad fact is that steroids are being used to make things easier for the athletes. The current format of games and the demands from the fans is somewhat overwhelming for many athletes unlike the days of Babe Ruth ‘The Sultan of Swat’. Nowadays, the demand to play in the many games both in the domestic leagues and in world championships has urged many athletes into steroid medication.
Many surveys have been conducted to ascertain the concerns that are clouding the game and just as was predicted, the results have been demoralizing to the fans of the game. Many athletes who have been questioned in regard to the recent spate of records being broken from here to Tokyo are of the opinion that steroids could be part of the equation. In baseball, it has been said that the use of steroid medications is rampant and that stringent control measures need to be fixed in place to save the face of the game.
There are lots of challenges that ensue after such deliberations have been made public. There is simply no way of keeping these matters under lock and key; they emerge soon and when they do they tend to make headlines across the globe.
The most recent case has to do with one Barry Bonds, the famous slugger. He is currently on the verge of breaking a milestone record in the game of baseball but as he inches closer to the target there are concerns being voiced about the genuineness of his achievements. He has of course categorically denied any involvement in the doping aspects of the game. The main concern however is not about the individual athlete but rather about what effect this will have on the upcoming sportsmen of the future. Will they simply resolve to use steroids so as to get it easy and so as to meet the fans expectations? It remains to be seen but efforts must be made to see that this is not the case.
