If you’ve seen the commercial for the prostate medication that seems to run nonstop during many football games (when many older men will be glued to the television), then you have probably already heard this fact that 1 in 3 men will suffer from prostate issues in their lifetime. This doesn’t exactly sit well with most men, many of whom don’t even know what their prostate does. We’re probably all familiar with that uncomfortable image of the doctor putting on a rubber glove and asking the patient to bend over to be checked. No man looks forward to that.
The good news is that if you’re a young male, you don’t have to worry about prostate exams for several more years. This organ grows from the time you are born until you end puberty at age 18 or 20. Then, it quietly does its job for the next 20 years or so, usually without any interruption. When you reach the age of 40, this organ may begin growing once again. By the age of 50, growth will be occurring at a rate which may impede your ability to urinate properly. It is by this age that all men should be engaging in checkups on a regular basis.
Then, there are the men who use steroids. If you have been educating yourself on the effects of AAS, then you’re probably already well aware of the fact that artificial testosterone can lead to issues of the prostate. It is repeated time and time again in the annals of anti-steroid literature and media, along with shrunken genitals and eggs frying in pans signifying brain function. But is this the truth? Repeated studies have been conducted over a period of twenty years to determine if androgens from anabolic steroids have a stimulation effect upon the prostate. Across the board, with doses from 200 to 500 mg per week of a testosterone ester, no prostate cell growth occurred.
Yes, some bodybuilders do develop prostate cancer. However, this can be from a variety of causes (including carcinogens) as well as genetics. There are going to be rare times when genetically, it is just in the cards to develop a cancer early. Additionally, when a bodybuilder uses 1000 mg, 1500 mg, or even a full 2 grams of testosterone per week, the effects felt by the body are going to be far beyond what a simple 250 mg lab study will show. We’re talking very toxic mixes here inside the body.
The prostate is a fickle organ, and one that due to its location and constant use, does break down at the cellular level as we age. If you live long enough, yours will fail you and you will develop a cancer of this organ. Granted, you might be 50 or 80 or 103 year old when this happens, but it is inevitable for all men. Your best bet is to keep an eye on it as you age. If you’re younger and you do use anabolic steroids, then you should even endure those uncomfortable examinations and just get yourself checked. Cancers in younger people are often much easier to catch and cure than with older patients.
