It is true that steroids have many side effects but this should be taken with a light touch. This is because; it all depends on the way you choose to use a steroid and the type of steroid that you choose. These side effects are very many and they cannot be discussed at a go which is why you need to narrow down and understand each side effect on its own, knowing why it happens, how it can be controlled and the extent of harm it can cause in the body. The immune system is just a part of what steroids can destroy and lead to its malfunctioning and this is always dangerous to an individual’s health.

The use of androgenic steroids regularly shows the production of different changes in an individual’s immune system. However, the so called changes could both be negative or positive depending on how the user views them. Normally people are used to be cross checking the negative aspects and ignoring the positives and this is what discourages steroid use. A good example of positives of steroid use is the increase of the capability of the immune system to handle viral illnesses making the body less susceptible to the illnesses. For users of Oxandrolone and Deca-Durabolin and especially the HIV+ patients, they can easily proclaim that, steroids serve a major role of improving their resistance therefore strengthening their immune system.

However, of late only few doctors are prescribing these types of steroids to their patients with the worry that, after withdrawal, patients will find themselves in great danger of having to experience strained immune levels and therefore make it difficult for their bodies to directly fight the pathogens. This case mostly coincides with the production of cortisol hormone, which is a catabolic hormone within the body. This hormone acts to suppress the general functioning of the immune system. When these administered steroids are abruptly withdrawn, there is always an androgen deficiency and this is endured for long until the immune is able to rebalance a normal hormonal production.

With testosterone and cortisol countering each other in several ways, the subsequent absence of normal levels of androgen may lead to cortisol taking an unusually very active state. It is in this period that, the imbalance makes the cortisol to strip the body of muscles and weaken them even further and this will weaken even the immune system. The resultant phase is accompanied with cases of colds and flu for the athletes and therefore causes the lowering of performance.

Anabolic steroids are also known to interfere with the normal clearance of corticosteroids which is usually in circulation within the body. This is because, the two processes happen to share several enzymes and in the case of competition with the androgens, the respective cortisol is broken down at a very slow rate and therefore rebuild up at a much faster rate. This means that, steroids must be well controlled in the manner of intake, otherwise, this will lead to immune imbalances and eventually bad health.
