Any attempt to gradually or suddenly discontinue use of steroids especially after an extended period of addiction to steroid medicines is not welcomed by the body. It is neither easy nor instantaneous. Withdrawing from such steroid medicine types like prednisone, prednosolone, methylprednisolone, betamethasone, cortisone, hydrocortisone, dexamethasone, or even triamcinolone, are serious and sometimes dangerous medical conditions by themselves. Tapering may therefore reduce potential severity of their withdrawal symptoms. Tapering should actually be adopted when a steroid dose has been taken for a duration exceeding three days.
The reason why discontinuing steroids use should be gradual is because it is laden with serious withdrawal symptoms that can drive an addict to absolute madness. The ideal way to execute the discontinuation of any steroid medication should be gradual and based on a weaning-off approach. An example of practices steroid users adopt to wean their bodies off their addiction is by tapering or diluting the dosage. The period of weaning off should be extended except in cases where the user has a very short time to achieve desired results.
Medical alerts of such medicinal steroid products like bracelet always do warn against prednisone withdrawal symptoms. Patients who have taken steroids on a regular basis for a medical condition have been known to require extra medication aimed to boosting stability of bodily hormonal levels. Hormonal imbalance may result to kidney failure, cardiac malfunction, brain damage, internal blood clotting or even stroke or paralysis of muscle groups.
Other known withdrawal symptoms of medicines derived from steroids include; emotional imbalance, short temperedness, irritability, violent behaviors, stress and serious depression. Of late, research findings claim that these psychological manifestations of steroid medicine withdrawal can develop into insanity cases or insomnia.
Some of the clinically established withdrawal symptoms of medicinal steroids include acute and deteriorating joint pains, undeserved general body fatigue even after periods of extended rest, severe and perpetual headaches or even muscle pains not synonymous with workout loads. Some research findings claim that if a body builder or any other athlete previously using steroids engages even in minimal workouts during periods of withdrawal, occurrences and severity of muscle tears are quadrupled. What most findings concur in however, is that discontinuing steroid use always drastically reduces the blood pressure sometimes to critical levels.
Patients may also experience the nasty pangs of nausea and sporadic vomiting. This mainly occurs as a result of interrupted metabolic processes some of which are dependent on the synthetic steroid supply.
Abruptly discontinuing the usual treatment adopted in patients especially those who have been treated with steroids for prolonged periods of time, causes very severe withdrawal symptoms. This is basically because of the fact that normal production of natural steroid chemical hormones in the patient’s body which had initially been switched off are still turned off and therefore abstaining from synthetic sources yields a hormonal imbalance. Impromptu withdrawal after extended periods of use result to adrenal crisis and exogenous adrenal insufficiency, both of which are conditions resulting from hormonal imbalance.
