As science progresses and modern medicine becomes more and more modern, medical advances will continue to allow us to live longer and longer. As governments, researchers, and pharmaceutical companies spend billions of dollars researching new medicines and their effects upon the body, those in the sports medicine community seldom see a new discovery that doesn’t in some way relate to their own field. With every new discovery in the field of sick & elderly health and well being, those in sports pharmacology devise numerous ways to exploit these advancements for sports performance enhancement. Non-steroidal androgens may be one such advancement with a great deal of crossover appeal.

Recent tests have been completed which compared the receptiveness of human receptors (those cells in our body which react to everything from oxygen to anabolic steroids) to different compounds. The goal of steroids is to facilitate a reaction between a compound and the muscle receptor cells. If scientists are able to discover non-anabolic substances, which bind to the receptors, then sports medicine doctors and practitioners will be able to create compounds with steroid-like effects, with none of the anabolic natures, which would show up on traditional steroid tests.

This initial study was the first of its kind to find success, and will likely be followed by many more, now that it has been realized that steroid-like gains are possible without the use of steroids. Why is this important? First, these drugs likely wouldn’t have the same side effects typically associated with anabolic steroids, including accelerated male pattern baldness, estrogen production, and acne, among others. Second, these drugs would likely have a longer half-life in the body than their more volatile anabolic counterparts. Finally, there is the nefarious purpose of avoiding detection from standard steroid testing. While not the goal of those in most research facilities, this goal will certainly exist in the minds of bodybuilding and Olympia chemists who make a living preparing athletes for world-class competition, and helping them to pass steroid tests.

These non-anabolic steroids are still years away from production. However, many in the scientific community are excited by this study demonstrating the capability to bind to receptors without the use of anabolics, and it’s without doubt that when (not if) these compounds are produced on a mass scale; the entire steroid game will change. Future generations might laugh at the toxicity we endured for steroid-like gains. They might have, in effect, a non-detectable steroid without the side effects.
