If you are an “Ironager”, or a bodybuilding fan who much preferred the classical physiques of the 60s and 70s to the monsters seen on stage today, you probably already have your mind made up about the influence of growth hormone in the sport today: You hate it. You remember what athletes looked like decades ago, when the emphasis was more upon shape and style that all-out mass at all costs. Back then, the bodybuilders would use a lot of orals once a year to get in shape, and remain natural for most of the off-season. They would be much bigger (and leaner!) on show day than they were 12 weeks out. For today’s monstrosities who balloon up over 300 pounds in the off-season, this would be unheard of.

In the year 1976, during the Olympic Games, the East Germany team did surprise many around the globe as they immediately, with an up thrust of sudden domination, became the best in the swimming category. The women team continued with their spree of surprises when they doubled their medal tally, as compared to the former Olympics, when they took 11 out of 13 Gold medals aligned for the sport. In the next twenty years, these women dominated this sport with awe inspiring vitality. But after the wall of Berlin had collapsed, the stark truth about their sudden domination was laid bare for all to fathom. These Olympians were being given doses of steroids and being told that they were doses of vitamins, good for their bodies and general health.
