Q: I’m a woman who wants to gain some serious muscle mass. What type of steroids should I be looking into?

A: That really depends upon your goal. If you want to forfeit all of the natural femininity that the Good Lord afforded you and become a heavy female bodybuilder, that is your choice, and heavy androgens will be on the menu. If you’re just looking forward to competing in bikini, figure, or fitness competitions, then a much smaller cycle will suffice.

Q: I will be going for figure than possibly bodybuilding in the future. Should I start with the testosterone cycle that is so popular with many bodybuilders?

A: Absolutely not. The moment you enter the arena, there is no coming back. The side effects are permanent and definitely prohibitive to use.

Q: What are some of these side effects you are referring to?

A: Virilization. Google it. It’s a scary word, and a world you don’t want to enter. Some of the side effects include a squaring of the jaw, a deepening of the voice, hair growth all over the body, hair thinning and loss on the head, an enlarged clitoris, acne, and many others. The majority of these side effects are irreversible. Your best bet is to avoid testosterone altogether for your entire bodybuilding career. You can achieve fine muscle gains and fat loss using other steroids with far less incidence of side effects.

Q: What steroids would you recommend as safe for female bodybuilders?

A: Oxandralone (sold as Anavar or Oxandrin) is very popular with women. A daily dose of 5 to 10 mg will lead to a harder, leaner physique with little to no side effects. Primobolin, taken orally at 12 to 25 mg per day is also very useful. Toxicity is near nil and virilization will not occur with low doses. Winstrol is also often considered useful, but can be a tad more toxic when taken in larger doses. Anavar and Primo are usually the safest bets for women, and universally recommended for those considered AAS use for that added boost. Men use these two compounds as well, in higher doses, with great success.

Q: What about ECA or Clenbuterol?

A: These fat-loss compounds are very useful for shedding body fat. They are a step down from drugs like Anavar and Primo in terms of effectiveness, as they don’t preserve and grow muscle in the way those compounds do. However, for most cases, fat-burners are more than adequate for helping the female reach desired body fat levels.

Q: Bottom line – should I use bodybuilding drugs to prepare for a competition?

A: The best initial advice would be to stick with ECA (Ephedrine, Caffeine, and aspirin) and see how far that takes you. The entry into steroid use brings with it a bevy or legal and health concerns which may not be worth a plastic trophy. If you are going to use, start with minimal doses and work your way up. Always use everything in moderation and focus upon the bigger picture.
